RACKING AWARENESS COURSE

HSE recognised racking awareness courses which allows people in house to carry out checks on the racking to identify safety risks that could be potentially dangerous. It’s a diluted version of the full SEMA inspection course and it gives attendees the knowledge and confidence to carry these checks out. It can also greatly reduce the damages to your racking systems and associated costs with repairs.

HSE recommend that the following occurs

1.       Any incident or damage to racks reported immediately

2.       Weekly checks of the racks by a person responsible for racking safety (PRRS)

3.       Annual SEMA Approved racking inspection

If you are interested in this course which is carried out on site at your premises,. Prices are based on number of people who want to attend and full course material is supplied plus a certificate of attendance. The course is a 1 day course.

SEMA Load Notices

Hi,

I am asked quite frequently about load notices on racking. Either reports come back with actions such as

  • Load notice missing

  • Load notices require updating due to insufficient information

  • Incorrect information

Before I explain please understand that load notices are there to ensure the maximum UDL (Uniformly distributed load) is not exceeded for the beams maximum capacity per pair of beams or beam level. Also if you are thinking of re designing your pallet racking configuration, adding in extra beam levels or increasing the height of the first beam level you MUST contact the supplier of the racking or manufacturer as all of the above will effect the capabilities of the structure and its strength.

Your load notice must show the following

  • Maximum weight in KGS per level

  • First beam height (NOT TO BE EXCEEDED)

  • Pitch distance between beam levels

  • Total maximum bay load

  • Supplier details

  • Date of installation

  • Warehouse Health and safety symbols

For an example Load notice get in touch pr.rackinginspections@gmail.com

Load notices are a minimum standard to be installed at the end of each run of racking. Beam load stickers can be installed as long as a load notice is in place. Beam stickers on there own will not suffice.

Independent racking inspections is there such a thing?

I just want to take a minute to clarify a few points of contention that have been floating around the racking industry lately. I can’t speak for every SARI out there, only for myself personally. If I do an inspection for a company that sells racking products, then I will pass them a copy of the report upon completion so they can carry out any recommended repairs as directed by their customer.

Under no circumstances would I undertake to quote a customer for repairs if I have been hired by a third party racking supplier. It doesn’t make sense! Racking Inspectors rely on Racking Companies to help highlight the importance for warehouse safety, especially when there are people carrying out inspections who aren’t SEMA approved. We all have a duty of care to make sure our customers know that an inspection carried out by a non SEMA approved person is not an inspection which satisfies any legal requirements.

SEMA Inspector's yearly seminar 2019

Our annual Sema Inspector’s conference was held this week in Liverpool, where inspector’s from all over the world met to be updated by industry professionals and discuss best practices in Pallet Racking and Warehouse safety.

We received invaluable advice on inspecting Cantilever systems and mezzanine floor structures, but the most beneficial advice given on the day was how to investigate Pallet racking collapses. I can’t stress enough how much prevention is better than cure when it comes to pallet racking safety. If you’ve never had an inspection, or you’re not sure if you need one then give me a call and I’ll be happy to talk through our inspection service and what you can expect from our reports.
